A mainland man was jailed for three months on Tuesday, after pleading guilty to using fake academic qualifications to gain a spot in a Chinese University (CUHK) postgraduate programme.
Bao Junyang, 30, admitted to obtaining services by deception at Shatin Court.
Prosecutors dropped a separate charge of using a false statement to obtain an entry permit against the defendant.
The court heard that Bao claimed to have graduated from New York University, and managed to gain admission to CUHK’s Master of Business Administration programme around two years ago.
Acting principle magistrate Cheang Kei-hong rejected the defence’s plea for a community service order, saying it would be unrealistic.
The magistrate gave one third of a discount for the jail sentence due to the guilty plea.
